Somatheeram Ayurveda Village
The world's first Ayurveda resort — classical Ayurveda on a Chowara Beach cliff near Kovalam
About the centre
Somatheeram Ayurveda Village is the world's first Ayurveda resort, founded in 1985 by Baby Mathew, who pioneered the 'Ayurveda hospital in a resort ambience.' Set on a cliff above Chowara Beach, 9 km south of Kovalam, its ten green acres of traditional Kerala houses and cottages look out over the Arabian Sea. NABH-accredited and Ayur Diamond classified by the Government of Kerala, it runs classical Ayurveda — twelve resident doctors (led by a former Director of Ayurveda, Govt. of Kerala), 60-plus therapists, 24-plus treatment rooms, freshly prepared in-house medicines from a 600-species herb garden, and dosha-specific cuisine. India's most awarded heritage Ayurveda destination (36 awards, including 6 National Tourism Awards), it pairs serious classical treatment with yoga, meditation and a calm seaside setting.

The setting
Set on a serene cliff overlooking Chowara Beach, just south of Kovalam, Somatheeram is where Ayurveda's resort era began. Founded in 1985 with a then-novel idea — an Ayurveda hospital in a resort ambience — it spreads traditional Kerala houses and eco-friendly cottages across ten acres of tropical gardens above the Arabian Sea. Here the environment itself is part of the cure: sea breeze, birdsong, golden beach and the slow rhythm of classical treatment, yoga and meditation, away from the noise of the world.

Why we curated this centre
Our honest read.
Somatheeram is the benchmark — the world's first Ayurveda resort and India's most awarded heritage Ayurveda destination, and the substance backs the reputation. NABH accreditation and Kerala's Ayur Diamond classification, twelve resident doctors (led by a former state Director of Ayurveda), 60-plus therapists, 24-plus treatment rooms, freshly prepared in-house medicines from a 600-species herb garden, and a personalised dosha-specific diet — this is classical Ayurveda run as a hospital, in a beautiful seaside resort. It's authentic without being austere: the Kerala houses are heritage, the cliff-top setting is lovely, and decades of international guests mean it's genuinely easy for a Western visitor to settle in — interpreters, structured programmes, polished hospitality. Best for someone who wants serious, classical Ayurveda — rejuvenation, Panchakarma or a specific concern — with the comfort and pedigree of the place that invented the category.
